Summer Water Use Advisory Issued

Summer 2020 Water Use Advisory

With the summer of 2020 upon us, and our first period of extended high temperatures and little to no rain for weeks, the Village of Mineola is taking this opportunity to remind all of our residents about water conservation.

Currently, three of our five water well production and distribution facilities are under re-construction to improve water treatment processes required by upcoming new drinking water standards required by the New York State Department of Health.   Due to these projects, we have only four out of five water production and distribution facilities operational.   This, combined with the summertime heat, is adding stress to our water system like never before.   For example, we are only at the end of June, yet we have already had a near-record water production and distribution for a single day.

At this time, the Village of Mineola is asking for the assistance of all residents.   Please adhere to the required odd and even day restrictions, by address, for the watering of lawns.   As a reminder, our Village Code prohibits any daytime watering between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm.  We are also asking that all automated sprinkler systems be adjusted so that lawns are watered only between the hours of 12:00 am and 4:00 am on those odd or even days.  While we have had hardly any rain, we are also asking our residents to please check and make sure that the rain sensor for your sprinkler system is operating properly.   We are asking that residents observe these restrictions now through September 15, 2020.

In addition to water conservation for lawn watering, we are asking residents to check for any conservation water devices they may have such as faucet aerators.  Please make sure that the screens are cleaned and working.

Residents should also check their toilets to make sure that they are not running or leaking when not in use.   A simple change of the flapper on a toilet can save thousands of gallons of water – and save you money on your water bills.

Another easy way to reduce the use of water is to place a 1-quart plastic milk container filled with water standing up in the tank of your toilet.  By taking this simple step, less water will be used when flushing the toilet, again reducing your water bill.

With your help, and the help of all our residents, we will be able to conserve water and not be required to place any additional restrictions on water use.

We thank you for your anticipated cooperation in helping us all conserve water this summer.
