Residential Refuse

All materials must be placed at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on the day of collection. No items may be placed at the curb for collection on weekends, and no items should be placed at the curb before holidays unless it is a scheduled collection day in accordance with the annual Holiday Collection Schedule.

All household waste (i.e., “garbage”) is collected Monday and Thursday (Route A) OR Tuesday and Friday (Route B), except as noted otherwise in the annual Holiday Collection Schedule.

Monday

Household Waste Collection:
Route A – Monday and Thursday Residential Area and Commercial Area and Apartment Buildings Collection

Yard Waste Collection:
Route A – Monday and Thursday Residential Area
10 Item Limit – Not to exceed 250 pounds in total weight of all items (Items: bag of grass, bundle limbs no longer than 4 feet, etc.)

Tuesday

Household Waste Collection:
Route B – Tuesday and Friday Residential Area and Commercial Area Collection

Yard Waste Collection:
Route B – Tuesday and Friday Residential Area
10 Item Limit – Not to exceed 250 pounds in total weight of all items (Items: bag of grass, bundle limbs no longer than 4 feet, etc.)

Wednesday

Waste Collection:
Commercial and Apartment Building Collection Only

Recyclables:
Glass, Metal Cans and No. 1 & No. 2 Plastics Only – Entire Village
Check the triangle on the bottom of the bottle/container. Any number other than No. 1 or No. 2 plastics should be discarded with household garbage. Do not place fast food cups/containers, plastic cups/cutlery, etc. with recyclables. Do not place recyclables in plastic bags. All food residue must be cleaned from recyclable items.

Thursday

Household Waste Collection:

Newspaper and Corrugated Brown Cardboard Collection:
Route A – Monday and Thursday
Newspaper and brown plain cardboard boxes only. Pizza boxes, cereal boxes or anything with graphics or waxy coatings are not recyclable; these should be disposed of with household waste.

Friday

  • As per the Village Code, all metal/white goods/appliances are to be collected by appointment only. There is a two item limit. Please call 746-6791 to schedule pick up.
  • Disposal of any flammable liquids or items, construction and demolition debris, propane tanks and tires are strictly prohibited.
  • Placing garbage cans or other items out for collection on weekends is strictly prohibited.
Notes on Refuse Collections:
 
  • There is a 10 bag/item limit each collection day with a weight limit of 250 pounds total per garbage collection day, except where noted.
  • Tree limbs must be cut in 4’ lengths, tied and bundled.
  • Leaves are picked up from November 1 through December 15.
  • Power tools such as lawnmowers, edgers, and other gasoline-powered equipment must be drained of all fluids and placed at the curb on your rubbish collection day.
  • Cardboard must be tied, bundled, and placed at the curb for collection on Thursday (Route A) or Friday (Route B).
  • Household hazardous waste such as oil, gasoline, pesticides, and paints are collected by the Town of North Hempstead’s S.T.O.P. Program. Call the town at (516) 869-6311 for details.
  • Propane tanks, flammable liquids, construction and demolition debris and tires are not collected by the Sanitation Division. Propane tanks must be returned to authorized dealers. Tires should be recycled by tire dealers.
  • Access to rear yard for residential household waste collection: A clear, unobstructed path at least 4’ wide must be provided for collection of residential waste from rear yards.
