Minutes of the meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Incorporated Village of Mineola held Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at Village Hall, 155 Washington Avenue, Mineola, New York 11501.

Mayor Martins called the Work Session to order at 6:45 pm.

Mayor Jack M. Martins called upon Trustee Pereira to report on his research into developing a village travel policy. Trustee Pereira distributed materials and two sample policies.

 

Mayor Jack M. Martins requested a motion to close the Work Session at 6:50 pm.

Mayor Martins opened the Public Meeting at 7:30 pm.

 

23 observers in attendance.

 

Mayor Jack M. Martins spoke about the Veterans Day ceremony November 11 conducted by Mineola-based veterans organizations and thanked them for their service to our nation and community, and wished all present a happy and safe Thanksgiving holiday.

 

Trustee Lawrence Werther offered his comments regarding his participation in the Veterans Day ceremony, warned residents to use caution when addressing home solicitations, and wished all present a happy Thanksgiving holiday.

 

Trustee Paul Cusato spoke about the Mustang Run November 16 and congratulated the event organizers and participants, thanked Commerce/TD bank for its honoring Mineola Fire Department members who reached 25 years of volunteer service, and paid homage to 58-year fire department veteran William Pokorney on his passing last week.

 

Trustee Thomas Kennedy commended the Department of Public Works for its extensive preparations in readying village streets for the Mustang Run each year and thanked veterans for allowing him to participate in the Veterans Day ceremony.

 

Trustee Paul Pereira also thanked the veterans organizations for holding the Veterans Day ceremony and reported that he had attended a meeting of Boy Scouts of America – Troop 45.

 

Mineola veterans presented a POW/MIA flag to the Board of Trustees.

 

Six speakers addressed the Board.

 

Mayor Martins announced that the Work Session would be reopened after a short break for the purpose of conducting one additional item of business.

 

Mayor Martins requested a motion to close the Public Meeting at 8:55 pm.

Mayor Martins gave a brief report on the 18-month negotiations process involving the Collective Bargaining Agreement the village has with its union employees and asked Village Attorney John M. Spellman to provide an overview of the terms of the new CBA.

 

Village Attorney John M. Spellman reported that, after extensive negotiations between the village and union negotiating teams, the United Public Service Employees Union had ratified the last offer extended by the Village of Mineola.

 

Resolution No. 264-08

 

Resolved to accept the Collective Bargaining Agreement as ratified by the United Public Service Employees Union.
