Minutes of the meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Incorporated Village of Mineola held Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at Village Hall, 155 Washington Avenue, Mineola, New York 11501.

Mayor Martins called the Work Session to order at 6:50 pm.

Resolved to approve a request by the Mineola Fire Department for the use of the Village Hall Community Center to conduct its 13th Annual Mineola Junior Fire Department Pasta Dinner Sunday March 8, 2009 and for set-up on Saturday March 7, 2009 from 8:00 am – 9:00 pm.

Resolved to award the contract for the 2008 Tree Planting Program to low-bidder Louis Barbato Landscaping for the following contract items:

Item #4:  51 – 100 Pyrus Calleryana “Chanticleer” variety Pear Trees at $ 133.00 ea.

Chief Scott Holliday presented a monthly report on the activities of the Mineola Fire Department.

Resolved to uphold a decision by the Records Access Officer to deny access to records pursuant to the Freedom of Information Law made under an appeal by resident Jeanne Falabella.

Village Attorney John M. Spellman reported that a summons had been received in the matter of an EEOC complaint against the Village of Mineola and the Mineola Fire Department.

 

Mayor Martins noted that the annual report by external auditors recommended the development of a written policy on travel expenses.  Mayor Martins appointed Trustees Pereira and Cusato, both of whom have experience with this subject, to develop a draft policy for the Board’s consideration.

Mayor Martins opened the Public Meeting at 7:45 pm.

 

40 observers in attendance.

 

Mayor Jack M. Martins opened the meeting by announcing that the local veterans’ organizations will be hosting a Veterans Day ceremony at 11:00 am on November 11 at the Veterans Memorial in Memorial Park.  Mayor Martins also spoke about the Village Halloween Party October 24 and commended all who worked so hard to make it a success.

 

Trustee Lawrence A. Werther spoke about veterans and reported that Boy Scouts of America Troop 45 is conducting a food drive.  Trustee Werther also congratulated those public officials who were elected or re-elected on Election Day.

 

Trustee Paul S. Cusato reported on the recent Mineola High School band competition and the Town of Hempstead Firematic Awards ceremony in which Chief Walter Crosby was a Firematic Award recipient.  Trustee Cusato also congratulated Robert’s Menswear on its 55th year in business and those who participated in the village Halloween Party.

 

Trustee Thomas F. Kennedy reported on the village Halloween party and urged residents to take time to attend the Veterans Day ceremony on November 11.

 

Trustee Paul A. Pereira reported on his participation in the Mineola Fire Department’s fire school training session and thanked the Mineola Fire Department and the Mineola Auxiliary Police Department for their participation in the Mineola High School homecoming parade November 1.  Trustee Pereira reported that the high school students who had previously given a presentation to the Village Board on the “Tents of Hope” project are going to Washington, D.C. the weekend of November 8-9 as part of that project, and offered his congratulations on the village’s Halloween party success.

 

Seven speakers addressed the Board.
