Minutes – Board Meeting 10/05/05

 

Minutes of the meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Incorporated Village of Mineola held Wednesday, October 5, 2005 at the Village Hall, 155 Washington Avenue, Mineola, New York.

Mayor Martins opened the Work Session at 6:30 PM.

 

Mayor Martins excused Trustee Paul Cusato who was detained at work and may be   joining the meeting later.

Building Department Superintendent, Daniel B. Whalen gave the department’s report for September.  

 

Resolution No. 342-05

 

Resolve to approve the installation of handicapped parking spaces at 305 Pennsylvania Avenue and 351 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Water Department Supervisor, Frederick Booher gave the monthly water report.  Mr. Booher also reported that beginning October 17, 2005 the Water Department would be conducting routine hydrant flushing between the hours of 8:30 AM and 3:00 PM through November 4, 2005.  

 

Mayor Martins requested a motion to go into Executive Session at 7:05 PM to discuss personnel matters.

Trustee Paul Cusato arrived while the Board of Trustees was in Executive Session.

 

Mayor Martins requested a motion to come out of Executive Session at 7:05 PM.

Resolved to hire Bryan Landini as a Temporary Laborer in the Sanitation Department at the union-starting rate.

Resolution No. 344-05

 

Resolved to appoint Michael Palumbo and Leonard Palumbo as full-time Laborers with Mechanic experience in the Highway Division at their current salaries.

Department of Public Works Superintendent, Thomas Rini announced that there would be a normal sanitation schedule for the Columbus Day holiday on Monday, October 10, 2005. 

 

Mayor Martins requested a motion to close the Work Session at 7:43 PM.

Mayor Martins opened the Public Meeting at 7:45 PM.

 

Mayor Martins announced that the next public hearing would be held on Wednesday, October 21, 2005.   Mayor Martins reported on the Coats for Kids campaign kick-off at the Community Center on Monday, September 26, 2005.    Mayor Martins also reported on a $120,000 grant money obtained by Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy.  The grant money is to be used for improvements such as paving at North Station Plaza.  Mayor Martins asked everyone for their patience and cooperation as roadway improvements are underway. Mayor Martins asked residents not to confront Village employees working on re-paving projects as they are doing preliminary work to be followed by the contractors.

Mayor Martins also commended Chief Holliday on his leadership of the Mineola Fire Department at the recent fire in New Hyde Park.  Mayor Martins asked residents to keep the Ignaczak, DiGiorgio, Dawber and Rowe families in their thoughts.

 

Trustee Lawrence A. Werther urged everyone to attend the upcoming Mineola in Style event at The Jericho Terrace on Tuesday, October 25, 2005 at 6:30 PM.  Trustee Werther

also reported on upcoming events at the Mineola Memorial Library.

 

Trustee Linda Fairgrieve thanked officials at the Town of North Hempstead for the Town’s $5,000.00 contribution to the Mineola Mustang Run.  Trustee Fairgrieve expressed her support for the New York Yankees. 

 

Trustee Paul Cusato expressed his condolences to the Ignaczak Family.  Trustee Cusato congratulated the Fire Department and Ambulance Corps for their response to the recent fire in New Hyde Park. 

 

Trustee John DaVanzo reported on Fire Department business such as new vehicles, Homeland Security training and FEMA Grant money.  Trustee DaVanzo also reported on some proposed uses and issues pertaining to the BOCES property. 

 

Mayor Martins opened the meeting to the public. 

 

VFW Commander Sal Cataldo requested permission to hold a Veteran’s Day ceremony at Memorial Park  (Community Center in foul weather) on November 11, 2005.
