Minutes of the meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Incorporated Village of Mineola

held Wednesday, September 20, 2006 Village Hall, 155 Washington Avenue, Mineola, New York 11501.

Mayor Martins opened the Work Session at 7:15 PM. 

 

In honor of the Village’s 100th Anniversary, Centennial Committee Members Robert Hinck, John DaVanzo and Candida Maia presented Mayor Martins and the Board of Trustees with a framed copy of the front page of the New York Times dated September 20, 1906.

 

Resolution No. 302-06

 

Resolved to approve bills and payroll.

Resolution No. 303-06

 

Resolved to approve the request by the Birchwood Court Owners, Inc. for the use of the Community Center Gymnasium for a special meeting on Monday, November 27, 2006 from 7:00 Pm to 9:00 PM with approximately 200 in attendance.

Mayor Martins opened the Public Meeting at 7:30 PM.

 

Mayor Martins reported on the Time Capsule opening that took place in front of the Mineola Fire Department earlier that evening.  Mayor Martins reported that the Time Capsule, buried in 1981, was opened with the assistance of the Board of Trustees, the Centennial Committee, and many who were present for the Village’s 75th Anniversary Diamond Jubilee such as former Mayor Ed Smith, Lou Sanders and Joe DiGiorgio. 

Mayor Martins stated that the contents of the time capsule would be on display soon at Village Hall and the Mineola Library.

 

Mayor Martins congratulated Sal Cataldo on becoming the Commander of the American Legion.

 

Trustee Lawrence Werther commended Mayor Martins and the Centennial Committee on the opening of the time capsule. Trustee Werther congratulated Mayor Martins on his presentation of the “State of the Village” address, which was sponsored by the Mineola Chamber of Commerce on September 19, 2006 at Village Hall. Trustee Werther reported that the Chamber of Commerce presented Mayor Martins with a check for $25,000.00 for the Streetscape Project.  Trustee Werther reported on the new deck awning donated by the Friends of the Mineola Library.  Trustee Werther also reported on September Library Card sign up month, upcoming library events and the patron survey available at the Mineola Library.

 

Trustee Linda Fairgrieve commended all who were involved with the Time Capsule opening and stated that should was looking forward to examining the contents more carefully. 

 

Trustee Paul Cusato stated that the Time Capsule opening brought back a lot of memories of his 58 years growing up in Mineola. 

 

Trustee John DaVanzo thanked everyone for their participation in the Time Capsule opening.  Trustee DaVanzo reminded everyone of the upcoming Centennial Parade on October 1, 2006 at 1:00 PM. Trustee DaVanzo announced the Grand Marshall for the Centennial Parade is Beatrice Hubbard.  Ms. Hubbard is a retired Mineola School teacher.

 

Trustee DaVanzo commended Mayor Martins on the “State of the Village” address on September 19, 2006.

 

Mayor Martins requested a motion to close the Public Meeting at 8:52 PM.
