Mayor Jack M. Martins announced the passage of the New York State Senate consolidation bill (S. 5661) which could eliminate villages, towns and fire districts, for example, and further stated that this legislation allows a referendum, without first studying the consequences, which could consist of a public vote without the necessary impact information, it could also allow a county to have a county-wide referendum to dissolve a village and allow non-village residents to vote in that referendum. Mayor Martins explained that all amendments to the legislation failed and that none were offered by the majority leaders which would exempt villages from this legislation.
Trustee Lawrence A. Werther commented on his disappointment with this bill, its passing and how the city seems to be dictating to villages.
Trustee Paul S. Cusato reiterated these sentiments and was shocked by Albany’s nearsightedness. Trustee Cusato thanked American Legion Commander, Sal Cataldo, and Veterans of Foreign War Commander, Manny Grillo, for the Memorial Day Parade and services.
Trustee Thomas F. Kennedy commented on his disappointment with the passage of this bill and stated that it was preposterous that this bill would lower taxes, further questioning who would provide services and what would happen to property values?
Trustee Paul A. Pereira commented that he was shocked by the lack of exemptions for villages and expressed his disappointment with Senator Johnson’s efforts in opposing this bill.
Mayor Jack M. Martins recognized all veterans and thanked all that came out to attend the Memorial Day Parade - it was well attended and very nicely done.
