Mayor Jack M. Martins stated that he participated in a land use forum and workshop sponsored by Molloy College and Energia in which discussions centered on smart growth elements being implemented in Mineola, reported that Station Plaza North project is underway with Phase I almost completed, Phase II is scheduled for September when the village is scheduled to receive the second half of its grant monies.  Mayor Martins commented that he is negotiating with Nassau County to secure the remaining grant money early so that the paving of the plaza could be done and the total project could be completed by the end of May. Mayor Martins also reported that he attended a Town of Hempstead Press conference in Floral Park where it was announced that the Long Island Railroad Third Track project has been removed from the Metropolitan Transit Authority’s (MTA) five year capital plan, and therefore is effectively dead.  Mayor Martins reported that he attended a Town of North Hempstead meeting regarding Dominick’s Deli and the zoning issues surrounding it and stated that the general concern was how to allow it to remain residential with Dominick’s Deli continuing to do business; announced that Mineola was once again named Tree City, USA by the Arbor Day Foundation and is happy and proud to say that Mineola has been a recipient of this award for over twenty years.  Mayor Martins further announced another adjournment on the T-Mobile Cellular Antenna application and state that T-Mobile will be required to notify surrounding residents by registered mail before this item will be placed on the agenda of any future Board of Trustee meetings.  Mayor Martins presented an update on the Garden City Verizon facility at 13th Avenue and announced that Mineola will be looking into hiring a noise consultant to work with Verizon and the Village of Garden City to correct this situation.

Trustee Lawrence A. Werther reminded everyone that on May 15, 2010 the Village of Mineola and the Chamber of Commerce will be hosting the Mineola Fair at Memorial Park and  welcomed everyone to come out and enjoy the fair; stated that in the Mineola American there was a letter from Library Director Charles Sleefe stating that library aid from New York State has been cut and encouraged everyone to write to their representatives letting them know that this needs to be reversed; thanked former Mineola American Editor Joe Rizza and welcomed Rich Forestano as the new Editor; commented on the article in Newsday regarding solid waste and reiterated that the contract Mineola signed provided significant savings to village residents.  Trustee Werther reported that he represented the Village of Mineola at an Eagle Scout ceremony for six boys and congratulated all of them and in particular commended Scoutmaster Donald McMahon for his many years of service.

Trustee Paul S. Cusato reported that he also attended the Town of North Hempstead meeting and that is was great to see so many people attending this meeting to support Dominick’s Deli and participate in the process so that the Town of North Hempstead would be aware of their positions on this matter.

Trustee Thomas F. Kennedy reported that the pavers on the Station Plaza North main concourse were filled in as of this evening and that Station Plaza North already has a different look and feel.  Trustee Kennedy congratulated Mr. & Mrs. Bill Crosby on their anniversary, and wished everyone a Happy Mother’s Day.

Trustee Paul A. Pereira reported that the “Brainteasers” didn’t win but did make it to the final eight and congratulated them on an outstanding performance. Trustee Pereira wished everyone a Happy Mother’s Day, and also wished Mr. Keefe a Happy Birthday.

Mayor Jack M. Martins commented on the solid waste article in Newsday and presented a brief summary comparison of the costs over ten years between Mineola’s contract with Omni Recycling of Babylon, Inc. versus the Town of North Hempstead proposed rates and stated that the village will be in a much better place as a result of this contract.
