Minutes of the meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Incorporated Village of Mineola

held Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at Village Hall, 155 Washington Avenue, Mineola, New York 11501.

Mayor Martins opened the Work Session at 6:50 PM.

 

Trustee Lawrence A. Werther was excused from the meeting.

 

Chief Scott Holliday led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Resolution No. 22-08

 

Resolved to approve the request by the Evening Star Quilters for the use of the East Classroom for a quilting workshop on Saturday, March 15, 2008 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Resolution No. 23-08

 

Resolved to approve the Mineola Athletic Association’s request for permission to hold the 2008 Opening Day Parade on Saturday, April 12, 2008 at 10:00 AM beginning at the Jackson Avenue School and ending at the Willis Avenue ball fields using the following route:

 

  • West on Jackson Avenue to Wardwell Road
  • North on Wardwell Road to Jericho Turnpike
  • East on Jericho Turnpike to Mineola Boulevard
  • South on Mineola Boulevard to Second Street
  • East on Second Street to Willis Avenue
  • North on Willis Avenue into the Willis Avenue ball fields

Village Clerk, Joseph R. Scalero, gave the Water Department report for January 2008. 

 

Chief Scott Holliday gave the Mineola Fire Department Report for January 2008. Chief Holliday gave an update on the repairs at Company No. 3 and Ladder Testing.

 

Superintendent of Public Works, Thomas Rini, gave a recap of the Department of Public Works activities for 2007. Mr. Rini reported on Village ballfield preparations, road resurfacing projects and tree maintenance.   Mr. Rini also announced that the Village would have regular trash collection on Lincoln’s Birthday, Tuesday, February 12, 2008 and President’s Day, Monday, February 18, 2008. 

 

Mr. Rini discussed boring samples to be taken around sump #125 at Memorial Park to help answer questions concerning the drainage problems in that area.

 

Village Treasurer, Giacomo Ciccone, reported on the Accounting Department activities for 2007 and preparations for the 2008/2009 budget.     

 

Superintendent of Buildings, Daniel B. Whalen, reported on the Building Department activities and revenue for December 2007 and January 2008.  Mr. Whalen also gave an update on upcoming construction projects in the Village. 

 

Mayor Martins introduced Michael A. Miranda, sponsor of Jack’s Run/Walk for Autism Awareness, who requested permission to hold this year’s run/walk in the Village of Mineola on June 7, 2008.

 

Resolution No. 25-08

 

Resolved to approve the request to hold Jack’s Run/Walk for Autism Awareness fund raiser, utilizing Village streets on June 7, 2008 subject to coordination of route and permits.

Mayor Martins opened the Public Meeting at 7:45 PM.

 

Mayor Martins reported that he met with the Town of North Hempstead Department of Public Works and Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman regarding the Village of Mineola’s east end drainage issues.  Mayor Martins also met with the Nassau County Department of Public Works.

 

Mayor Martins reported that boring samples would be taken at the recharge basin at Memorial Park to diagnose and address water flow questions and potential soil problems.

 

Mayor Martins attended a Congestion Pricing Hearing at Hofstra University.  Mayor Martins entered a statement opposing the plan and suggested that any revenue collected should be distributed to the affected communities.     

 

Mayor Martins reported that Mineola School Superintendent Dr. Lorenzo Licapoli had announced his retirement and that he would be missed.

 

Mayor Martins discussed “Flow Control”, mentioned by the Town of North Hempstead Supervisor as a Town revenue source that would require the Village of Mineola to use the Town of  North Hempstead for garbage disposal and increase our costs. Mayor Martins asked Village Attorney John Spellman to give a historical analysis and to explain the concept of solid waste “Flow Control”. 

 

Trustee Linda Fairgrieve gave no report.  

 

Trustee Paul Cusato reported that Mineola Auxiliary Police Chief Michael Spae would be presenting the Neighborhood Watch report at the next public meeting.

 

Trustee Thomas Kennedy reported that he had terrific time both “A Night on the Town” and the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast. 

 

Mayor Martins requested a motion to close the meeting at 10:00 PM.
