Minutes of the meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Incorporated Village of Mineola held Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at Village Hall, 155 Washington Avenue, Mineola, New York 11501.

Mayor Martins called the Work Session to order at 6:45 pm.

 

Presentation by Mayor Jack M. Martins and the Board of Trustees to Mrs. Marjorie Irace and family honoring former Village Trustee Isadore Irace by renaming part of Horton Highway, “Irace Highway”.

Resolution No. 31-09

 

Resolved to approve a request by the Evening Star Quilters for use of the Village Hall Community Center gymnasium for Friday, November 6, 2009; Saturday, November 7, 2009 and Sunday, November 8, 2009 for their annual quilt show.

Resolved to approve a request by American Legion – Mineola Memorial Post No. 349, for use a Village Hall Community Center general purpose room on the first Monday of each month, January 2009 - December 2009 from 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm and third Thursday of each month, as needed, for Executive Committee meetings.

Resolved to authorize a lump-sum benefit payout of $17,206.09 from the Fire Service Award Fund to Mineola Fire Department volunteer firefighter, Fernando Araujo pursuant to the Length of Service Awards Program (LOSAP).

Village Clerk Joseph R. Scalero presented a preliminary monthly report on the activities of the Justice Court.

 

Superintendent of Public Works Thomas J. Rini presented a monthly report on the activities of the Department of Public Works, including a status report on recent snow plowing and water main breaks.

 

Superintendent of Buildings Daniel B. Whalen presented a report on the monthly activities of the Building Department.

 

Chief Scott Holliday presented report on the monthly activities of the Mineola Fire Department.

Resolved to accept the resignation of Deputy Treasurer Carl Marchese and approve a lump-sum separation payout of $10,200.00 for unused accumulated time in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Resolved to accept the resignation of Department of Public Works employee Andrea Lapietra and approve a separation payout of $55,464.42 for unused accumulated time in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement payable in two annual payments, as requested.

Mayor Jack M. Martins announced that he will be attending a meeting with Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi on February 9, 2009 related to Nassau County’s Master Plan and ongoing projects in the Village of Mineola, complemented the Department of Public Works on the excellent job during a recent snow event, related an incident regarding Nassau County Police stopping two Village plows trucks during plowing, announced that Joe Attard of the Mineola Junior Fire Department was elected President of the Nassau County Junior Fire Department, discussed Village of Garden City opposition to the Winston subdivision application at the Village of Mineola’s Planning Board meeting of January 26,  2009, reminded residents that February 11, 2009 the Library will be holding a President Lincoln exhibit the same night the Village of Mineola Board of Trustees meets, and announced that the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council has submitted a plan for federal monies for a Nassau County HUB-Mineola bus shuttle service.

 

 

Trustee Lawrence A. Werther also commended the Department of Works on recent snow removal and reminded those with snowblowers to blow snow onto their own property and not into the street. Trustee Werther reminded everyone coping with the current economy to shop locally, mentioned that Senator Johnson contacted him regarding the inclusion of Jericho Turnpike between Mineola Boulevard and Willis Avenue in New York State Department of Transportation funding, and commented on Assemblywoman Michelle Schimmel’s article in Anton Publications and Newsday opposing government consolidation.  

 

Trustee Paul S. Cusato reported on the Mineola Junior Fire Department election and its upcoming Annual Pasta Dinner and reminded everyone that Mineola Fire Department’s fundraising is done by mail only.

 

Trustee Thomas F. Kennedy commented on the Winston project moving forward, commended Trustee Werther on his “relentless” pursuit of monies from New York State for Jericho Turnpike improvements, and questioned the necessity for county police cuts when the police tax fund is intact.

 

Trustee Paul A. Pereira commented on the Winston subdivision hearing before the Village of Mineola Planning Board and the Village of Garden City’s appearance in opposition to the application.  Trustee Pereira also gave a history of commuting on Long Island this century versus Westchester County’s which dates to the Civil War.
