Mayor Martins asked Trustee

Mayor Martins reported that
a letter had been sent by Trustees Fairgrieve and Cusato without Board
resolution to Nassau County Police Commissioner James Lawrence requesting the
Department’s input and answers to specific questions on the Mineola Police Task
Force Report. This letter resulted
in a meeting of Trustee Fairgrieve, Trustee Cusato and Police Commissioner
Lawrence on January 17, 2006 at the Commissioner’s request to review the Nassau
County Police Department’s written response. Mayor Martins reported that the meeting
took place prior to the Police Task Force hearing on January 18, 2006.
Trustee John DaVanzo
reported that he was invited to a subsequent, private meeting with Commissioner
Lawrence, but declined. He added that the actions of Trustees Fairgrieve and
Cusato are the worst he has seen in 37 years of public service.
Trustee Paul Cusato stated
that he went to the meeting because he has concerns about task force issues and
wants to keep residents informed.
Trustee Linda Fairgrieve
reported that the meeting with Commissioner Lawrence was a fact finding
exercise.
Trustees Fairgrieve and
Cusato added that their meeting with Police Commissioner Lawrence lasted
approximately 1 ½ hours, but that they could not recall or relate the details of
the meeting, other than discussing the written response and the legality of
creating a Village Police Department and it’s possible effect on the Mineola
P.A.L.
Trustees Fairgrieve and
Cusato stated that they planned to disclose details of the January 17, 2006
meeting to the Village Board of Trustees and public, but could not explain why
they failed to do so at the public hearing the next day, January 18, 2006. Trustee Fairgrieve stated that she
intended to present the information at the following day’s meeting, but didn’t
due to the lengthy agenda of the January 18, 2006 meeting.
