Mayor Jack M. Martins reported on the presentation at the beginning of the Work Session by four Mineola High School students regarding a pancake breakfast fundraiser “Hands and Hearts for Haiti” to raise money for Haiti which would be held in the school cafeteria on Saturday from 8:00 AM – 10:30 AM and thanked them for their efforts and reiterated that this is a community effort organized by the students. Mayor Martins provided an update on the resolution of the noise issue emanating from Verizon’s Garden City construction adjacent to residents of 13th Avenue and stated that he has filed a police report with the Garden City Police Department concerning this, adding that he will continue to pursue options until this problem is resolved. Mayor Martins announced that Mineola has been recognized by the LI Index and the Rausch Foundation as the model village on Long Island for Smart Growth initiatives, Master Planning, and Visioning process specifically citing our Downtown revitalization programs.
Trustee Lawrence A. Werther congratulated the Mineola High School students for taking the initiative to organize “Hands and Hearts for Haiti” pancake breakfast and also congratulated the students’ parents for raising such fine young men and women. Trustee Werther commented that given the current economy businesses are consolidating and/or closing and encouraged residents to shop Mineola first as these businesses are a vital part of our community and contribute significant taxes to the Village. Trustee Werther reminded everyone that a directory of stores and services is located on the Chamber of Commerce’s website.
Trustee Paul S. Cusato requested that everyone participate in the Mineola High School fundraiser and help those that are in need.
Trustee Thomas F. Kennedy congratulated the students from the Mineola High School on the “Hands and Hearts for Haiti” fundraising program and encouraged all residents to make an effort to participate. Trustee Kennedy reminded residents to stay alert if approached by someone posing as government employees trying to gain access to their house, and noted that village employees carry ID with them. Residents should ask to see ID before allowing anyone into their home.
Trustee Paul A. Pereira congratulated the Board of Trustees and the Mayor as well as their predecessors on being recognized by the LI Index and the Rausch Foundation and acknowledged the efforts of everyone in obtaining this honor. Trustee Pereira encouraged residents to participate in the Mineola High School fundraiser pancake breakfast and reminded them to bring donations of medical supplies that are badly needed in Haiti.
