Mayor Martins thanked the Centennial Committee for the Ecumenical Service on December 30, 2006 and gave special thanks to Roger Liel who served in Iraq.  Mayor Martins congratulated Michael Balboni on his appointment as New York State Deputy Secretary for Public Safety, Office of Homeland Security.  Mayor Martins reminded everyone that the Centennial Time Capsule burial is scheduled for Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at 5:30 PM and invited all organizations to contribute to something for the time capsule.

Trustee Lawrence Werther wished everyone a Happy New Year.  Trustee Werther invited everyone to attend the fund raiser for St. Aiden’s and Corpus Christi Schools on January 18, 2007 at Jericho Terrace.  Trustee Werther reported on the Mineola Auxiliary Police Department’s year to date budget expenditures and upcoming events at the Mineola Memorial Library.

Trustee Linda Fairgrieve had no Liaison Report for the evening but introduced a “Five Point Plan for Public Safety”; prepared by Trustee Linda Fairgrieve and Trustee Paul Cusato.

“Five Point Plan for Mineola’s Public Safety”

1.  Create a permanent “Public Safety Task Force” made up of volunteer residents appointed by

the Village Board (four members appointed by the majority, three members appointed by the     minority) and chaired by the Chief of the Mineola Auxiliary Police.  The purpose of this task

force would be as follows:

            A.  Identify problems, dangerous trends and other public safety issues in the village

            B.  Hold monthly meetings open to the public to receive public input on public safety

                  issues.

            C.  Meet quarterly with Nassau Police Officials and the Village Board to relay

concerns and discuss solutions and long-term goals

2.  Establish a new “Neighborhood Watch Program” as existed in the Village in the past in

order to bring neighbors on every street in the Village closer together, identify problems

in their early stages (ex. – streetlight outages, graffiti, vandalism, kids hanging out in

public parks, etc.) and make residents more aware of issues in the community at large.  In

order to establish the “Neighborhood Watch Program”, the Village would enlist the

assistance of the Nassau County Police, Mineola Auxiliary Police as well as other

sources.  The “Public Safety Task Force” could hold informational meetings for

“Neighborhood Watch” Leaders in order to properly train participants in the program.

3.  Establish a “Property Crimes Investigator” in the Mineola Building Department to assist

police with investigations regarding vandalism, graffiti, etc.

4.  Establish and Ad-Hoc “Mineola Homelessness Advisory Committee” made up of residents

who could work with police, social service agencies, churches and non-profits to assist

Mineola’s homeless and work on getting them off the street and into programs or

     housing.

5.  Conduct a major lobbying effort enlisting the assistance of Village residents (letter

writing, e-mail and telephone campaigns) to County and State officials in order to secure

additional police coverage for Mineola.  This should be an on-going, bi-partisan effort to

ensure that Mineola receives a level of coverage relative to our police tax burden.

Mayor Martins requested a motion to vote on the adoption of the “Five Point Plan for Mineola’s Public Safety”.
