1. Create a permanent “Public Safety Task Force”
made up of volunteer residents appointed by
the
Village Board (four members appointed by the majority, three members appointed
by the minority) and chaired by the
Chief of the Mineola Auxiliary Police.
The purpose of this task
force would be as follows:
A.
Identify problems, dangerous trends and other public safety issues in
the village
B.
Hold monthly meetings open to the public to receive public input on
public safety
issues.
C.
Meet quarterly with Nassau Police Officials and the Village Board to
relay
concerns and discuss solutions and long-term goals
2. Establish a new “Neighborhood Watch Program”
as existed in the Village in the past in
order to bring neighbors on every street
in the Village closer together, identify problems
in their early stages (ex. – streetlight
outages, graffiti, vandalism, kids hanging out in
public parks, etc.) and make residents
more aware of issues in the community at large.
In
order to establish the “Neighborhood Watch
Program”, the Village would enlist the
assistance of the Nassau County Police,
Mineola Auxiliary Police as well as other
sources.
The “Public Safety Task Force” could hold informational meetings for
“Neighborhood Watch” Leaders in order to
properly train participants in the program.
3. Establish a “Property Crimes Investigator” in
the Mineola Building Department to assist
police with investigations regarding
vandalism, graffiti, etc.
4. Establish and Ad-Hoc “Mineola Homelessness
Advisory Committee” made up of residents
who could work with police, social service
agencies, churches and non-profits to assist
housing.
5. Conduct a major lobbying effort enlisting the
